The movement

Societas Felicitatis is a secular, Christian and Catholic movement.

Those who wish to be part of the movement are called to respect its values and core principles, set out below. They form the shared foundation of the community and of the path it proposes.

GOD / INDEPENDENCE

Put God above everything else. Learn to detach yourself from material things and from unhealthy dependence on anything or anyone. Never let things or people possess you. Detachment creates independence.

By putting God above everything else, you eliminate dependence and suffering, because where your heart is, there your treasure will be also. If you place your treasure in earthly things, you will suffer because your heart will be there, and those things can be stolen, broken, lost, or even killed. The only things you need are: 1. attention — to be careful about what happens around you, so as not to let other things or people take advantage of you (you may take into your body or do anything, except what harms your neighbour, creates attachment, or causes you to lose your independence at the mental, physical, or spiritual level and your closeness to God, who is above all things); 2. memory; and 3. people who love you and whom you love in equal measure, as described in the principle of Love. People who hate you or do not love you are not needed in your life. Yet above all of this, you must place God above everything, loving Him with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. You must be completely independent at the level of the heart, where you need no one except God first, and then only those who love you and whom you love in equal measure. With your mind, you must think independently, relying primarily on your own abilities and filtering everything critically, because God is above all things. With your soul, you must not commit the seven deadly sins and must not feel attachment to anything except God in Heaven, who is more important than everything; this law represents the soul. This law will give you salvation.

By loving God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind, you will eliminate suffering and find the Way.

RESPECT

Do no harm, and do not allow others to harm you. Remove hatred and evil from your heart, soul, and mind. Evil is like a fog in your mind that prevents you from seeing the truth; this law represents the mind. This law will give you intelligence. First, you have to give respect, and then expect it in return.

You will see reality more clearly and eliminate evil and suffering from your heart, mind, and soul; you will see the Truth.

LOVE

Love your neighbor as yourself. When God and respect come first, love can become sincere, healthy, and free. But first, you must put God and respect before love, because if you put love first, love could create attachment and suffering.

Love everyone as you love yourself, as if everyone were you: you should love them neither more nor less than yourself. This law represents your heart and gives happiness if the rest is done correctly, but you must do the rest correctly to have the happiness of this law. When these principles are lived correctly, love leads to true happiness; this law represents the heart — and so you will find Life.

God / Independence → Respect → Love = Way, Truth, Life

Once you have done these three things, set yourself an immaterial goal aligned with the talents God has given you. Life will give you signs of what you are truly good at. You were made for it; it is your destiny chosen by God. You must cultivate your talents and make them bear fruit.

Do God's will, guided by a noble purpose. For example, if you are good at being a doctor and have a talent for it, after following the three points above, you should set yourself a noble goal: "I want to be a doctor to save human lives."

It can be anything, as long as it is aligned with your talents and accompanied by a noble purpose.

Do not fall in love with things you are not very good at or pursue material things, because you will become more frustrated, you will struggle more, and you will lose control of your life.

YOU MUST PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION: THE DEVIL WILL DO EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO LEAD YOU AWAY FROM ALL OF THESE LAWS AND THIS NOBLE PURPOSE, THROUGH HIS TEMPTATIONS AND THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE.

This is our special prayer to be recited 10 times at breakfast, 10 times at lunch, and 10 times before going to sleep.

Happiness and the values to embrace within the movement are founded on four essential principles:

4.Having a noble purpose in life, aligned with one's talents

Introduction

The secret to happiness

In this lies the secret to happiness: these are the core principles at the heart of Societas Felicitatis.

At the foundation are these rules that I did not invent, but that Jesus taught as the most important rules to follow, from which all other laws and prophets derive.

These two rules, followed in this way according to Jesus, lead you to the way, the truth and the life. Filter every thought, behaviour and action based on the rules that Jesus gave.

Love God with all your heart, soul and mind

This is the first of the two rules, given when the teacher of the Law asked Jesus which laws were the most important.

You may have things, property, status and material goods, but you must not become attached to them: God is above everything. Detachment from things gives you freedom and keeps God in first place.

Attachment generates suffering and a loss of control. It can lead you to protect what you own to the point of harming your neighbour. You may have things, but do not let them possess you.

Where your heart is, there your treasure will be. If you put your heart in material things, there your heart will be; material things can be stolen from you, lost or broken. God cannot be stolen from you, you cannot lose Him and He does not break: your heart will be safe. This detachment also prepares you to live the second point: respect, which will be explored later.

Love your neighbour as yourself

This has two sub-points.

Respect: do not harm and do not let yourself be harmed in equal measure; do not do to others what you would not want done to you. Remove evil from within you, from your heart and your mind. Without the evil that blinds you, you will see more clearly and do what is most right in order not to harm and not to be harmed by your neighbour; this also helps eliminate suffering and pain.

Love: if everything else is done correctly, this brings true happiness. You must love your neighbour as yourself; you must imagine that everyone is you. Putting love before respect could cause attachment, jealousy, obsession and harm to your neighbour. There is also an unhealthy love, but love is what brings true happiness when everything else is done correctly.

From these two laws all other laws and prophets derive, as Jesus says.

Reflection

A goal and a healthy purpose in life

After these main laws that Jesus has given us, set for yourself a goal and a healthy purpose in life with a noble aim aligned with your talents.

Life will give you clues about what you are truly good at and capable of. Do that, because your talents have been given to you as a gift, different for each of you, for the person you were made to be. You must use them—this is your true destiny.

Do not set your heart on material things such as money or possessions, because then God will no longer be the centre of your life. You will suffer if you place your heart on material things because they can be taken away, lost or broken.

If you are good and talented as a doctor, do that with the noble aim of saying: “I want to be a doctor to save human lives.” The rest will be given to you in addition.

Live in truth. Love with your heart. Leave a sign in the world.

Societas Felicitatis considers happiness as more than a private emotion: it is a question of how one lives, relates, chooses and participates in the life around them. With a deliberately philosophical and secular perspective, Andrea Ferrerio traces a path from the individual to society, the nation, the continent and the world.

The book does not offer a formula or a doctrinal reading. A nation is called to turn shared values into institutions that protect liberty and dignity, widen opportunity and give citizens meaningful ways to participate in public life.

Across a continent, nations are invited to pursue cooperation, dialogue and a common civic culture that respects difference while seeking the good they can build together.

The world

The horizon ultimately becomes global: a world in which prosperity, peace and human development are understood as responsibilities that cross every border.
